Soy not a major cause of Amazon deforestation

10/01/2018 at 20:38h

Brasília – A report resulting from a multi-sector effort commissioned on an annual basis by the soy industry workgroup (Grupo de Trabalho da Soja - GTS) indicates that in the past 11 years, although planted area for oilseeds tripled in Brazil, soy accounted for only 1.2% of total close-cut deforestation (the type in which all vegetation is removed) in the Amazon.

Farmed lands went from 1.14 million hectares (ha) in 2006/2007 to 4.48 million ha in 2016/2017, as per the report released this Wednesday (10).
