Buildings to get energy seal

Brazil’s utility company Eletrobras is set to launch an initiative to measure energy efficiency levels at buildings. Aspects will include facades and roofs, lighting and air conditioning.

Rio de Janeiro – On the 26th this month, the Brazilian power company Eletrobras is launching the Selo Procel Edificações (Procel Seal for Buildings), designed to measure the energy efficiency levels of buildings in Brazil. The seal will follow the guidelines of Selo Procel para Equipamentos e Eletrodomésticos, for equipment and appliances, launched 20 years ago. “In the wake of this success, we are releasing Selo Procel Edificações, which follows the same logic of awarding the best in its category,” the manager of Eletrobras’ Energy Efficiency Projects Department, Fernando Perrone, has told Agência Brasil.

To get the seal, entrepreneurs and builders must submit a project or building to an inspection organization. Three separate systems will be reviewed, including facades and roofs; lighting; and air conditioning. Selo Procel Edificações will be awarded to class A buildings – the highest energy efficiency rating, in each of the three systems. Buildings will be reviewed in two stages, during the project stage and following completion.
