Medalist receives scholarship from the University of Jordan
Ahmad Abughaush won the first gold medal in the history of his country at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics in men’s taekwondo 58 - 68 kg event.
São Paulo – The University of Jordan decided to award a full scholarship to Physical Education student Ahmad Abughaush, who won a gold medal in taekwondo in men’s 58 - 68 category at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. On Sunday (28), the university held a tribute ceremony to the 20-year-old athlete. The information is from the Jordanian news agency Petra.
“He’s a source of pride and model student, who truly belongs to his country and his university. We are proud of his achievement and holding Jordan’s flag high”, said the University of Jordan’s president Azmi Mahafzah, according to Petra. The president promised the university’s full support to Abughaush in his search for more titles.
The athlete gave thanks for the support and expressed hope that his achievement will encourage other Jordanian athletes to search for great results.
Abughaush beat in the final Alexey Denisenko, from Russia, who won bronze in London 2012 in the 58 kg category. In the semifinals, he beat Joel Gonzalez, from Spain. In his quarterfinal match he beat two-time world champion Daehoon Lee, from South Korea.
The young athlete won Jordan’s first gold medal in the Summer Olympics.
