Taubaté to play world handball tournament in Qatar
The team will represent Brazil at the 2016 IHF Super Globe, the premier international championship for the sport. A four-time Pan American champion, it will try to outscore the European favorites.
São Paulo – Taubaté is representing Brazil in the Super Globe, the world handball championship set to happen in Qatar from the 5th to the 8th this month. The Brazilian team qualified by winning its fourth Pan American title last May in Argentina.
The athletes will leave for Qatar this weekend and won’t have much time to recover from the jet lag – the Arab country is six hours ahead of the Brazilian time zone. The first match is scheduled for Monday (5).
“The championship is bracket-based and we’ll play the European champion. It’s a tough championship and the Europeans are runaway favorites,” Taubaté coach Marcus Tatá told ANBA.
At 7am BRT on the 5th, Taubaté will play Poland’s KS Vive Tauron Kielce. The tournament begins with quarterfinals and moves on to the semifinals and finals, with losing teams playing for the 5th to 8th places.
Competing teams include Füchse Berlin (Germany), the current Super Globe champion; Paris Saint-Germain (France); Esperance Sportive de Tunisie (Tunisia); Lakhwiya (Qatar); Al Sadd (Qatar); and Sydney Club (Australia). If it beats the Polish team, Taubaté will play the winner of Paris Saint-Germain vs. Esperance Sportive.
This is Taubaté’s fourth straight time at the IHF Super Globe in Qatar. It finished sixth in all other editions, but Tatá believes things can change this year. “Last year we played a great match against Hungary’s Desve, which was [like] a collection of the world’s best players. Each year, our international experience increases, and that’s saying a lot,” he said.
To go up against the big European teams, Tatá is relying on the likes of goalkeeper Maik Santos and the left forward André Martins Soares, aka Alemão. They both played in the national team at the Rio Olympics.
