Santos to play friendly match with Kenitra, from Morocco
The game will be played in Pacaembu, São Paulo, and will be used to introduce the new players to the fans. Tickets go on sale on Wednesday (25).
São Paulo – Santos Futebol Clube will open its 2017 season with a friendly match against KAC Kenitra, a team from Morocco’s premier league. The match is scheduled for January 28, Saturday, at 5 pm, in Pacaemby stadium, São Paulo. Ticket prices range from BRL 10 (USD 3.15) to BRL 60 (USD 18.93).
One of Morocco’s most popular soccer teams, Kenitra is the second oldest club founded by Moroccans only. It won the premier league championship four times, in 1960, 1973, 1981 and 1982, in addition to having won the second league twice, in 1976 and 2002, and the Morocco Cup once, in 1961.
Currently, however, the team is not doing well: Kenitra is in last place in the standings of the Moroccan league with only 12 points in 15 games.
In turn, Santos came in second place in the Brazilian league last year and has two World Championships, three Libertadores da América cups and eight Brazilian league titles. This season, the team is aiming for the title of the continental tournament.
The choice of a Moroccan team wasn’t random: Santos is sponsored by Moroccan airline Royal Air Maroc. The company wants to increase exposure of the team in Morocco and the friendly match is part of this strategy.
According to the Brazilian sports press, initial plans called for the game to be played in Casablanca, but Santos’ coach, Dorival Júnior, believed the trip could interfere with the team’s preparations for the season.
