Qatar Airways, São Paulo mayor in investment talks
According to city mayor João Doria Júnior, the Qatari state-owned carrier is interested in investing in rejuvenation of the expressways that run along rivers Pinheiros and Tietê.
São Paulo – The mayor of São Paulo, João Doria Júnior (of the party PSDB) is in talks that could lead to Qatar Airways investing in rejuvenation of the expressways that run along city rivers Pinheiros and Tietê. The politician met this Thursday (16) with Qatar Airways’ CEO Akbar al Baker in Doha, Qatar.
“We have outlined a proposal for Qatar Airways to support the São Paulo expressways,” Doria said in a video shot in front of the carrier’s headquarters, and uploaded to the mayor’s social media. According to him, both expressways handle an average of 3.5 million people a day. They are also the route to GRU Airport, Latin America’s biggest – and this attracted the airline’s attention.
Doria would not reveal any details. Brazilian press outlets said investment could amount to some BRL 20 million, including pavement, lighting and landscaping work. The deal reportedly does not provide for visual advertising – whatever marketing involved would be through word-of-mouth.
“In a few weeks we will be able to announce whether it will happen, and how,” said the mayor in the video, adding that al Baker “was very motivated and enthused” with the proposal.
Doria has been in the Middle East since early this week. Prior to Doha, he travelled to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where he spoke with local banks and investment funds. His plan is to showcase investment opportunities in São Paulo to Arabs. According to him, the city is about to “undergo the biggest privatization program of any municipality in the history of Brazil.”
