Energy consumption up 2.8% in January

Consumption went up in all four major sectors surveyed and in all five regions of Brazil. The biggest increase was in industry.

Rio de Janeiro – Electricity consumption increased by 2.8% in Brazil year-on-year in January to 1,084 gigawatts/hour(GWh). According to data released this Friday (3) by the Energy Research Company (EPE), consumption went up in all four major sectors and in all five regions of the country.

The highest growth was seen in industry, at 4.4%, driven by textiles, automobiles, rubber and plastic, metal works, and pulp and paper.

Household consumption climbed 1.2%, with trade and services going up marginally by 0.3%. Other sectors, including agriculture, consumed 0.6% more power in January.

Region-wise, consumption increased the most in the South (5.5%) and Southeast (2.6%), followed by the Midwest (1.9%), the Northeast (1.8%) and the North (1.7%).
