São Paulo – São Paulo state governor Geraldo Alckmin welcomed this Tuesday (21) at government seat Palácio dos Bandeirantes the UAE minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. They discussed ways to encourage trade and investments, the São Paulo government website reported.

“We are increasing our ties with the UAE in industries such as infrastructure,” the governor said on Twitter.

Also welcoming the foreign minister alongside Alckmin were government secretary Saulo de Castro, undersecretary for Partnerships and Innovation Karla Bertocco, secretary for Energy João Carlos Meirelles, Investe São Paulo CEO Sérgio Costa, and the head of the Special Advisory for International Affairs, Ana Paula Fava. The UAE ambassadress in Brasília, Hafsa Abdulla Mohamed Sharif Alulama, and other officials accompanied Nahyan to the meeting.

São Paulo government numbers show the UAE was the Middle East country that had the most ministerial visits to Brazil since 2010. Last week, the governor sat down with staff from the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), the leading sovereign fund in the Arab country, and early on this year he met with the new UAE ambassadress in Brasília.

São Paulo is the Brazilian state that sells the most goods to the UAE. According to the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Foreign Trade and Services, exports reached USD 93.3 million in January and February, a sum tantamount to 31% of Brazil’s total USD 298.2 million in export revenue to that country.

In the first two months of the year, São Paulo shipped to the UAE mostly sugar, aircraft, fuel, gold, polymers and meats. Trailing São Paulo on the list of leading Brazilian suppliers of goods to the UAE are the states of Paraná, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, and Espírito Santo.

After convening with the governor, the minister was scheduled to attend the opening of the new headquarters of the UAE consulate in São Paulo, late this Tuesday afternoon. Mayor João Doria Junior was also due to attend.
