São Paulo district to host Arab festival

An institute that works with refugees is organizing an event this Saturday and Sunday in the bohemian district of the city of São Paulo. There will be typical foods, sale of goods and art presentations.



São Paulo – An Arab festival will take place this weekend at Vila Madalena district in the city of São Paulo. It will be the first edition of the Festival Janela do Oriente (Eastern Window), organized by the Refugee Reintegration Institute – Brazil (Adus) and with the participation of refugees from Arab countries.

According to information made available by the organizers, the event on Saturday (29) and Sunday (30) will present a bit of the richness of Arab culture. It will include typical dishes from the region, such as the kibbe, shawarma, stuffed dates and the dessert mahmoul, among other recipes.

In addition to the food, Syrian refugees will do Arabic calligraphy and henna temporary tattoos and sell purses, accessories, perfume, footwear and handicraft. Journalist Anas Obeid, a refugee from the Syrian city of Damascus, will tell stories about his homeland.

The festival will also feature art presentations. Yazan Zwawe, born in Syria from a Palestinian family, will perform the typical Arab dance dabke. Brazilian Suria Zakia will perform in a belly dance presentation. Their performances take place on Sunday, starting 4 pm.

The festival will run from 11 am to 8 pm on Saturday and Sunday at Armazém da Cidade.
