Brazilian, Tunisian FMs sign on to agreements

Khemaies Jhinaoui met with Aloysio Nunes Ferreira to enter into deals concerning young people, technology, and economic cooperation. Libraries from both countries also reached a memorandum of understanding.

São Paulo – The Tunisian minister of Foreign Affairs, Khemaies Jhinaoui, had appointments this Thursday morning (27) with his Brazilian counterpart Aloysio Nunes Ferreira at the Brazilian Foreign Ministry seat Palácio Itamaraty, in Brasília. Besides discussing aspects of the Brazil-Tunisia bilateral agenda, the foreign ministers signed on to agreements concerning young people, innovation, and the economy.

Three agreements were signed: one is designed to foster economic relations; another one encourages cooperation in science, technology, and innovation-oriented projects; and the third one concerns the sharing of experiences on both sides. The National Library of Tunisia and Brazil’s National Library Foundation also entered into a memorandum of understanding.

The agreements were signed following the solemn opening session of the 3rd Session of the Brazil-Tunisia Joint Commission. The commission’s goal is to carry out initiatives designed to bring the countries closer, as well as exchange impressions on international political issues.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the morning, the ministers went over the bilateral agenda and reaffirmed their commitment to talks for a cooperation and investments facilitation agreement between Brazil and Tunisia. They also touched on tandem efforts in tourism, healthcare, culture, and defense.

Tunisian FM convened with president Michel Temer

Jhinaoui also made a visit to the Brazilian president, Michel Temer, at the federal government seat Palácio do Planalto. According to the presidential cabinet, it was a courtesy meeting – Temer tries to always find time to welcome foreign ministers: recently, he welcomed the minister of the United Arab Emirates. No decisions or announcements were made during the Tunisian minister’s conference with the Brazilian president, the cabinet spokesperson said.

The visit was the first in ten years by a Tunisian FM to Brazil.

Following the meeting, Jhinaoui returned to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry to speak to the press. On Friday (28), the FM will remain in Brasília to deliver a lecture at diplomats school Instituto Rio Branco and sit down for a meeting with Agrarian and Social Development minister Osmar Terra.
