Brazilians’ spending abroad up 34%

Spending by Brazilians in other countries totaled USD 1.4 billion in May. The amount is the highest for the month since 2014.



Brasília – Brazilians’ spending when travelling abroad totaled USD 1.496 billion in May of this year, according to data by the Brazilian Central Bank (BC) made public this Tuesday (27). This is the highest value for the month since 2014. Spending in May of this year was 34.41% higher than the one registered in the same month of 2016 (USD 1.113 billion). From January to May of 2017, spending abroad totaled USd 7.295 billion against USD 5.161 billion registered in the same period of 2016.

Spending by foreigners in Brazil totaled USD 419 million in May, and USD 2.682 billion in the year’s first five years, against USD 434 million and USD 2.754 billion registered, respectively, in the same periods of last year. With these results, international travelling spending registered a deficit of USD 4.613 billion in the first five months of the year.
