Brazil: 70% increase in lodging options

The increase in accommodations for tourists occurred during the last five years in Brazilian metro areas. It went from 373,600 in 2011 to 639,300 last year.

Brasília – In the last five years, lodging availability in Brazilian capitals increase over 70%, going from 373,673 accommodations in 2011 to 639,352 last year. According to a survey by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), commissioned by the Ministry of Tourism, currently the country has the capacity to host, simultaneously, 2.4 million people.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the significant rise was boosted by the country’s preparation to receive tourists in the so called mega events cycle, such as the FIFA Confederations Cup, in 2013, the FIFA World Cup, in 2014, and the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, last year.

Using data from the Ministry of Tourism and the Brazilian Central Bank, IBGE points out that, between 2011 and 2016, the number of tourists that entered the country went from 5.4 million to 6.6 million, with 50% of this total coming from South America.
