Saudi market a priority to Brazilian rice producers

Saudi Arabia has been chosen as one of the priority countries for the sector’s promotion project, with actions happening in 2018 and 2019.

Press Release

Project priorities were defined at a meeting in Porto Alegre

São Paulo – Overseas trade promotion project Brazilian Rice has selected eight markets as priorities for 2018 and 2019, among them Saudi Arabia, according to information made available this Friday (28). The program is a partnership between the Brazilian Rice Industry Association and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).

According to the project’s statement, among the actions to be developed in these priority markets are trade missions, attendance in trade shows, matchmaking, training for exporters and initiatives aiming to remove trade barriers.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services, USD 2.67 million worth of rice were exported from Brazil to Saudi Arabia in the first half, up 15.5% from H1 2016. Export volume climbed 15.2% to approximately 5.300 tons.

Rice is a staple of Arab and Saudi cuisine.

According to the statement from the project’s partners, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Peru, Panama and the United Kingdom already import rice from Brazil, but the potential is there for an increase in sales. These countries will be targeted by promotional actions.

Three other markets – Colombia, Mexico and China – have restrictions in place against the entry of Brazilian product. Here, the goal is to remove these barriers and break into the markets.

The statement goes on to say that the priorities were set at a meeting in Porto Alegre with delegates from over 20 project-affiliated companies. It adds that these affiliates account for a combined 78% of rice exports from Brazil.
