United Nations holds photo contest on asylum

The UN Is accepting entries from students of pictures of subjects relating to its Sustainable Development Goals and the challenges that immigration and asylum entail. The deadline for entry is August 30.

São Paulo – The United Nations (UN) is accepting entries for a photo contest on refugees and immigrants and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The contest is open to graduate and postgraduate students or students from technical schools around the world. The deadline for entries is August 30.

The contest is held by the United Nations Information Centre in Tokyo and the Sophia University, with special cooperation from photo agency Getty Images Japan. The 2016 edition saw 624 entrants from 47 countries.

Contestants must pick one or more SDGs and express their meaning in a photograph. The UN expects the students to convey their personal views on what sustainable development is.

The 17 SDGs were outlined during the 2015 United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development. They include ending poverty, achieving zero hunger and quality education, reducing inequality and fighting climate change.

There will be a special selection for photos of refugees and migrants. The prize is part of the UN’s “Together” campaign, designed to fight discrimination against people who leave their homes to seek opportunity in other countries.
