Enrolments open for Middle East course

Extension course ‘Middle East and International Politics’ begins next Saturday morning (19) at the Pontifical Catholic University in São Paulo, covering current and past subjects.

São Paulo – The Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) is accepting enrolments for extension course Middle East and International Politics, with classes on Saturdays at its Perdizes campus.

Devised by the Study Group on International Conflicts (Grupo de Estudos sobre Conflitos Internacionais - Geci) and by the National Science and Technology Institute Studies on the United States (Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia para Estudos sobre os Estados Unidos - Ineu), the course is meant to spread knowledge on the region’s past and contemporary history and its place in the current international political scenario.

The program will include the war in Syria, the birth and rise of the Islamic State, Palestine-Israel issues, and the struggle for regionwide supremacy, as well as the interests of the USA and Russia. Past subjects will include political movements and the creation of national states.

According to the PUC-São Paulo website, the course will rely on “reflections about historical and contemporary aspects of the Middle East to provide a solid, high-level background to tailor up-and-coming professionals to the demands from the internationalization of corporate strategies, the new job requirements of international-level civil servants (cooperation, presence in dedicated international entities, etc.), and the growing professionalization of non-governmental organizations.”

The course is intended for graduate and postgraduate students and professionals in International Relations, Social Sciences, Economics, History and Journalism looking to learn more about aspects of the Middle East and International Politics.

Course coordinator is professor Reginaldo Mattar Nasser, who holds a baccalaureate degree in Social Sciences from PUC-SP, a master’s in Political Sciences from Unicamp, and a doctorate degree in Social Sciences from PUC-SP. He has been the head of the university’s International Relations Department since 2013.

The course will span 60 class-hours, with classes on Saturdays from August 19 to November 25. The cost is BRL 2,430 (roughly USD 761), payable in six instalments.
