Rio de Janeiro – The Extended National Consumer Price Index-15 (IPCA-15), a preview of the official inflation rate, stood at 0.35% in August. The rate is higher than July’s preview, which had shown a deflation (price decline) of 0.18%, but lower than August 2016 (0.45%).

According to data released this Wednesday (23) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), year-to-date the IPCA-15 stands at 1.79% while year-over-year it stands at 2.68%. This the lowest year-over-year rate since March of 1999 (2.64%).

August’s inflation preview was especially impacted by the price hike in the transportation sector (1.35%). The 5.96% hike in fuels was the strongest single-item impact in the month’s inflation.
