UN: USD 2.5 million for energy in Gaza

The Gaza Strip will get money from a humanitarian fund to mitigate the effects of an energy crisis that’s been impacting the region for four months already.

São Paulo – The United Nations granted USD 2.5 million to mitigate the power crisis that has been hitting the Gaza Strip for four months already. The money comes from a humanitarian fund focused on aiding with urgent needs of the local population. “The serious decline in living conditions in Gaza continues,” said UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Development Activities for Gaza, Robert Piper, in a press release.

The funds will be used to strengthen an operation of the UN itself that supplies fuel and generators to 190 health, water and sanitation facilities. Also to be supplied are medical equipment, solar panels and money, among others. The region is facing a power crisis since April, when a power plant was shut down due to a local dispute.
