Inflation stands at 1.62% per year

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), index of the official inflation rate, stood at 0.19% in August and now is at 1.62% in the year’s first eight months.

Rio de Janeiro – The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), the official inflation rate index, stood at 0.19% in August of this year. The rate is the lowest for an August since 2010 (0.04%). It stood below the 0.24% of July of this year and the 0.44% of August of last year.

According to data released this Wednesday (6) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the IPCA stands at 1.62% in the year, the lowest for the period since the beginning of Plano Real in 1994. Year-over-year, the index reaches 2.46%, below the lower threshold of the inflation target, which is 3%.

Food products were the main items responsible for the decline of inflation in August. On the other hand, transportation and housing were, once again, the items responsible for the IPCA not registering a sharper decline.
