President Temer meets with Arab leaders in New York

The Brazilian head of state sat down with his counterparts Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine and Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi of Egypt in the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

The president of Palestine was invited to visit Brazil

São Paulo – President Michel Temer of Brazil met with his counterparts Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine and Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi of Egypt this Tuesday (19) in New York, where world leaders have gathered for the 72nd General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). The one-on-one meetings took place after the Brazilian’s address at the event’s opening.

Abbas was invited by Temer to visit Brazil, according to the Brazilian president’s official Twitter account. In an interview with ANBA early this month, the ambassador of Palestine in Brasília, Ibrahim Alzeben, said his president is expected to travel to Brazil before the year is over for the official opening of the new embassy headquarters in the federal capital. The facilities have been active since February 2016.

Temer and Sisi discussed bilateral relations between Brazil and Egypt. The Egyptian president wishes to boost trade with Brazil, and he offered his country as a gateway to Africa and the Middle East, also according to Temer’s Twitter account.

President of Egypt is hoping to boost trade with Brazil

Exports from Brazil to Egypt were outstanding over the past few months, having reached USD 295 million in July, up 110% from July 2016 according to the Brazilian Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services. This meant Egypt was the leading Arab importer of goods from Brazil during the month.

According to Temer, Egypt’s president also complimented him on reforms in Brazil and on how fast the country managed to find its way out of recession, in as reference to facts mentioned by Temer in his address at the General Assembly.
