Legislative Assembly pays tribute to Palestinian people

Solemn ceremony in celebration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People takes place next Monday (27) in an auditorium of São Paulo’s Legislative Assembly.

São Paulo – São Paulo’s Legislative Assembly (ALESP) will hold a solemn ceremony next Monday (27), at Auditorium Teotônio Vilela, to celebrate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which is on November 29. The event at ALESP will have a poem recite, movie screening, lecture about tourism in Palestine, speeches by authorities and tasting of Arab sweets.

The event is an initiative of state representatives Leci Brandão (PCdoB) and Pedro Tobias (PSDB) and is organized by the Brazilian Center for Solidarity with the Peoples and Struggle for Peace (Cebrapaz), the Arab Palestinian Federation of Brazil (Fepal), the Jerusalem Institute and the Arab Palestinian Brazilian Society of São Paulo.

The organizers are expecting the presence of Palestine’s ambassador in Brazil, Ibrahim Alzeben, one of the authorities set to speak in the event. The Palestinian refugee, Amhad Milhem, will recite a poem by Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwich. The superintendent of the Jerusalem Institute, Ali El Khatib, will give a presentation on tourism in Palestine and a short film on Palestine’s history will be screened.

The information was given to ANBA by the press advisory of representative Leci Brandão. She says that she has never been to Palestine, but is always an activist for the causes regarding equality and the rights of peoples and, thus, decided to propose the tribute.

“The Palestinian people had and still have their national and human rights suppressed, as attested by the resolutions of the United Nations (UN). Therefore, this people is deserving of the support of all liberty-, justice- and peace-loving people. To allocate a day to call for awareness for the legitimate struggle of this people is imperative,” said Brandão.

The event takes place between 7 pm and 10 pm and is open to the public in general. Representatives of government and non-governmental organizations, leaders of the Arab community and of organizations linked to the Palestinian cause will attend.
