Tunisia olive oil output to be up 120%

The African country is expected to see the biggest output out of any Arab country in the upcoming crop, as well as the biggest year-on-year increase in the world.

Tunis – Tunisia’s 2017-2018 olive oil output is poised to see the biggest growth of any country in the world, Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) reported. Estimates from the International Olive Council (IOC) made public by the Tunisian government, olive output will be up roughly 120% to 220,000 tons, from 100,000 tons in 2016-2017.

The IOC places Tunisia as the fifth biggest global olive oil producing country in this season, trailing Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey. Tunisia will be the biggest producer out of any Arab country.

Morocco’s olive oil production is expected to climb 27% to 140,000 tons, with Algeria’s going up 27% as well, to 80,000 tons. Jordan and Egypt are seen producing 25,000 tons each, up 25% from the past season, with Libya’s output climbing 12% to 18,000 tons. Lebanon’s olive oil production should amount to 23,000 tons, down 8%.

TAP quoted the IOC saying global olive oil production will increase by 14% to 2.894 million tons, with consumption going up by 5% to 2.954 million tons.
