São Paulo – Every Tuesday, the Refugees’ Dinner takes place at Fatiado Discos and Cervejas Especiais, a bar and record store at Sumaré district in the city of São Paulo. The idea behind the dinner is to include Syrians and Palestinians in the Brazilian labor force and to promote social integration.

The kitchen is in the internal yard, with a surprising view of the city

The event has been taking place for more than a year, always from 7 pm to 11 pm, and it’s a partnership with Ocupação Leila Khaled, which shelters refugees in the Glicério district, also in the city of São Paulo.

Two cooks and a cashier, Syrian and Palestinians refugees, take care of the dinner, preparing pasta and fillings, service and payments. They speak a little Portuguese, enough to friendly interact with the clients.

Fatiado’s kitchen is in a covered area in the middle of the internal yard, on the back of the house, which has a surprising view of the city. The menu includes the traditional Saj, a large sfiha with zaatar, beef and cheese and filling options; the vegan option is the falafel (fried chickpea and herbs dumpling) sandwich with salad and tahini sauce.

The bar and the record store remain open during the dinner. Fatiado Discos e Cervejas Especiais is at Professor Alfonso Bovero Avenue, 382, São Paulo.
