UN launches appeal for Palestinian refugees

After a cut of US funds, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has launched an emergency appeal of USD 800 million for refugees in Syria, Gaza and the West Bank.

São Paulo – The commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Pierre Krähenbühl, launched this Tuesday (3) an emergency appeal of USD 800 million to Syria, Gaza and the West Bank during a press conference at the UNOG Palais des Nations (United States Office at Geneva).

Krähenbühl said the reduction in US funds threatens ability to deliver vital services

Nearly USD 400 million will go to refugees in Syria, with the other half going to regions of Palestine, in Gaza and the West Bank. The appeal will also cover the support for near 50,000 Palestinians from Syria that escaped to Lebanon and Jordan.

“The majority of Palestine refugees in the occupied Palestinian territory and from Syria rely on UNRWA to provide aid which is literally life-saving, including food, water, shelter and medical assistance,” said Krähenbühl. “Our appeal enables UNRWA to continue delivering desperately needed relief to those affected by deepening emergency situations. However, the Agency’s critical financial crisis following the reduction in US funds threatens our ability to deliver these vital services,” he explained.

Krähenbühl said that “supporting UNRWA emergency appeals is not a substitute for an urgently needed political solution to the underlying conflict. It is, however, fundamental to sustaining the dignity and strength inherent in the Palestine refugee community,” he said.

One week ago, in response to an unprecedented financial crisis, UNRWA launched a global fundraising campaign called #DignityIsPriceless. For more details, visit www.unrwa.org/donate.
