Brazilian retail sector grew 2% in 2017

The volume of sales increased over 2016, after two years of decline.

Rio de Janeiro – The volume of sales of the Brazilian retail sector increased 2% in 2017 in comparison to the previous year. The data, from the Monthly Survey of Trade, was released this Friday (9) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The rise in sales came after two consecutive declines: in 2015 (-4.3%) and in 2016 (-6.2%).

Three of the eight sectors surveyed by the IBGE ended the year with a growth, with the highlights being the furniture and home appliances (9.5%) and fabrics, clothing and footwear (7.6%). Other sectors who also increased sales were pharmaceutical, medical and perfumery (2.5%), other personal use items (2.1%) and supermarkets and food products (1.4%).
