Retail up 0.9% in January in Brazil

Sales volumes increased month-on-month, a Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) poll showed. In the 12 months through January, sales were up 2.5%.

Rio de Janeiro – Retail sales in Brazil were up 0.9% in January from December, after a 0.5% drop in December from November. The numbers are from the Monthly Survey of Trade made public this Tuesday (13) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Sales also picked up in the moving quarter average (0.3%), year-on-year in January (3.2%) and in the 12 months through January (2.5%).

In January from December, sales went up in five out of eight retail industry segments, including personal and household items (6.8%) and office, computer and communication materials (3.7%). Sales also increased for supermarkets, food and beverages and tobacco (2.3%), fabrics, clothing and footwear (0.9%) and books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (0.3%).
